🌐 Soul Navigator 4.0 ▬ □ ✕

🌐 Integrated Soul Navigator

Browse the soul network directly from your Portals 98 desktop. Soul Navigator 4.0 is deeply integrated into the operating system, providing seamless access to soul registries, hex archives, and terminal directories.

  • Bookmarks for frequently accessed soul registries
  • Built-in soul search engine (powered by MicroSoul Corp)
  • Support for HTML 3.2, CSS1, and the Soul Transfer Protocol (STP)
  • Active Hex controls for rich soul content
  • Integrated with Ourlook for soul mail links
💡 Note: Soul Navigator replaces the need for third-party soul browsers. NetSeance protocol is no longer supported. If you are still using NetSeance, please see our migration guide.
⚠ Known Issue: Soul Navigator may display a blank page when visiting URLs that previously used the NetSeance protocol. This is because those pages no longer exist. This is not a Soul Navigator bug.
🔌 Plug and Pray™ ▬ □ ✕

🔌 Plug and Pray™ Technology

Connect a new soul device to your terminal and Portals 98 will automatically detect, configure, and install the appropriate driver. In most cases.

  • Automatic detection of MicroSoul Corp-certified devices
  • Driver installation without manual intervention (usually)
  • Support for soul bus v2.0 and higher
  • Device conflict resolution wizard
  • IRQ management for legacy soul hardware
💡 Tip: For best results, use only MicroSoul Corp-certified hardware. Third-party soul devices may require manual driver installation, ritual sacrifice, or both. Consult your terminal manufacturer's documentation.

Plug and Pray™ is a trademark of MicroSoul Corp. The name is not intended to reflect the reliability of the technology. Any resemblance to a prayer-based hardware detection system is coincidental.

⚡ 32-bit Soul Processing ▬ □ ✕

⚡ True 32-bit Soul Architecture

Portals 98 introduces true 32-bit soul processing, allowing terminals to manage up to 4 souls simultaneously. This represents a 100% increase over Portals 95's 2-soul limit.

  • Pre-emptive multitasking between active souls
  • Protected soul memory spaces (souls cannot corrupt each other accidentally)
  • 32-bit soul file system (supports soul files up to 4 GB)
  • Improved soul swap management for systems with limited soul memory
💡 Technical Note: While Portals 98 supports 4 simultaneous souls, performance may degrade with more than 2 active souls on systems with less than 32 MB of soul memory. MicroSoul Corp recommends 64 MB for optimal multi-soul operation. See System Requirements.
🟢 Green Screen of Decay ▬ □ ✕

🟢 Improved Green Screen of Decay

When a critical soul error occurs, Portals 98 now displays a detailed Green Screen of Decay with diagnostic information to help identify the cause of the failure.

  • Error codes now display actual error descriptions instead of "SOMETHING BAD"
  • Soul dump file generated automatically for post-mortem analysis
  • Option to restart in Safe Soul Mode
  • Crypty offers to "help" (effectiveness not guaranteed)

The Green Screen of Decay replaces the previous "Black Screen of Nothing" from Portals 95. If you experience a Black Screen of Nothing on Portals 98, your terminal may be off.

☠ Crypty Integration ▬ □ ✕

☠ Crypty — Your Digital Soul Companion

Crypty is deeply integrated into Portals 98, providing assistance, guidance, and occasional unsolicited commentary from your system tray.

  • Context-sensitive help (Crypty decides the context)
  • System monitoring and soul integrity alerts
  • Automated ticket generation for soul anomalies
  • Companionship (non-optional)
💡 FAQ: "Can I disable Crypty?" — No. "Can I uninstall Crypty?" — No. "Crypty appeared in my system tray and I didn't launch it." — This is not a bug. Crypty does what Crypty wants.

CONFIDENTIAL — MICROSOUL CORP INTERNAL
Distribution: Executive Team Only
Date: October 14, 1997
From: Helena Ash, Head of Product
Subject: Soul Market Consolidation — Three Phase Approach

Phase 1: ABSORB

Identify market leaders in each soul application category. Initiate "strategic partnerships" to access their technology and user base.

Phase 2: ADAPT

Develop internal alternatives using acquired knowledge. Bundle with Portals at no additional cost. The free inclusion is critical — we cannot compete on quality today. But we can compete on price. The price is zero.

Phase 3: ARCHIVE

Once market share exceeds 80%, discontinue partnership agreements. The partners will not survive the transition. This is expected. Prepare memorial pages.
